‘I Am Thankful Month’ Begins

- WCN Columnist MARIE ROY

Twenty-five years ago I was privileged to accompany my nephew Charlie and Carol Pitts, his mother Nellie Pitts and sister Betty Baker to Texas, to attend the annual Pitts family reunion. It was a fun, extended weekend and on the way home we were discussing the good times. Charlie decided to have a Myers family reunion the next year, which they did host, and have continued to do so all these years.

This year, only 42 attended, lower attendance because of illness, ball games, birthday parties, trips, etc. With a family as large as ours, and so many in school, it is impossible to find a date when everyone can be there. However, the weather was perfect for the last of October, cool and clear, so there was plenty activity and visiting inside and outside. We welcomed the newest addition to our family, Mrs. Seth Latta (Kaytlynn ) and her mother Mrs. Waskom. Next year promises to have at least two more additions to our family so it just keeps growing.

The last of October ushers in November, and November is “I am so Thankful” month, family stories, adoption, family care givers, Hospice, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, flu awareness, lung-cancer awareness, healthy skin, sleep comfort, Georgia pecan, peanut butter lovers, vegan, National roasting, drum, aviation history, American Indian heritage, and Veterans in the classroom month.

Veterans Day is Nov. 11 (fly the flag) and Thanksgiving is Nov. 24 (thank a veteran).

In 1863 President Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday of every November a day of Thanksgiving. During the second World War, President Roosevelt tried to change the date a week earlier, but it didn’t last.

Happy birthday to Bill Wright, Kevin McGarrah, Chad Myers, Johnny Cheatham, La Verne Sanderson, Brandon Bradley, Matt Pinkerton and Willis Winkler. Happy Anniversary to Darrel and Eloise Parker. Happy years all!

Remember the time change — set your clocks back one hour on Nov. 6.
