Intern’s Football Dream

- By Mark Humphrey

FARMINGTON — Intern football coach Chris Henry has a dream that is right in line with the objective the Cardinal staff and players bring to camp every year.

The University of Arkansas junior majoring in Kinesiology P-12 wished the 2016 Farmington football team would make the state 5A playoffs.

Henry was quick to answer early in the season, when asked what he personally hoped to accomplish during his internship.

“Being able to reach the playoffs - something I never got to do as a player, I would love to do as a coach,” Henry said.

Henry hails from Rosebud, a town of 429 according to the 2000 census, situated 21 miles west of Searcy in White County. Although the 2013 population was projected to have grown to 485, the town is so small that Henry describes the location in relation to larger towns.

“Rosebud is at the intersection of the highways that go from Cabot to Heber Springs ( Arkansas 5) and from Conway to Searcy ( Arkansas 36),” Henry said.

Henry played high school football at Rosebud as a cornerback and wide receiver, the same positions he is coaching at Farmington. Henry offered a frank assessment of the Cardinals in the preseason.

“There is a lack of over- all athleticism and depth, but there is great potential, especially among the wide receivers,” Henry said.

Summing up his opportunity, Henry is thankful to be around football, saying, “I’m glad to be back on the sideline.”
