Veterans Honored At Assembly

- MARIE ROY WCN Columnist

Responding to special invitations, Anna and I attended the Farmington School’s annual Veterans Day Assembly, where around 40 Veterans and family members attended Friday.

The High School Crimson Select Ensemble sang the “Star Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful.”

Following the Pledge of Allegiance, was the Presentation of Colors, which is always a heartfelt event. As each flag was posted, the Veterans of that branch of service stood at attention. Absolute quiet reigned as the POW- MIA flag was posted.

Special guest speaker was Sergeant Major Kevin Osnes, with very enlightening and sometimes humorous, remarks.

“Battle Hymn of the Republic” was performed by the 70- member High School Band, followed by Taps at the closing of the program.

Our sincere thanks to the faculty and students for their reminders of what has been sacrificed for our freedoms.

If I have shared the following before, I still think it is appropriate for Veteran’s Day, July 4, etc. and yes, even Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and in between. Sons died for freedom A mother asked President Bush, “Why did my son have to die in Iraq?”

Another mother asked Harry Truman, “Why did my son have to die in Korea?”

Another mother asked Franklin D Roosevelt, “Why did my son have to die at Iwo Jima?”

Another asked Woodrow Wilson, “Why did my son have to die on the battlefield in France?”

Yet another mother asked Abraham Lincoln, “Why did my son have to die at Gettysburg?”

And yet another asked George Washington, “Why did my son have to die near Valley Forge?”

Then long, long ago, a mother asked “Heavenly Father, why did my son have to die on a cross outside Jerusalem?”

The answers to all these are similar, that others may have life and dwell in peace, happiness, and freedom.

Happy birthday to Wayne Caswell, Lorene Schooler, Kelly Bradley, Josh King, David Bush, Vince Wofford, Jim Morris, Tubby Shannon, Denise Mounce.

Happy years, all!
