Lady Cardinals Reverse Outcomes

FARMINGTON GIRLS SPLIT GAMES

- By Mark Humphrey

FARMINGTON — After losing to Harrison on a last-second shot last Tuesday, Farmington (15-5, 5-2) flipped the outcome after trailing Siloam Springs late in the fourth quarter Friday.

An 11- point lead evaporated and the Lady Cardinals found themselves down, 52-50, when Morgan Vaughn connected on a 3- pointer for Siloam Springs. On the in- bounds, Farmington freshman Mackenna Vanzant was fouled and she made the Lady Panthers rue the day. Vanzant’s free throws tied the game, then Farmington aggressively tied up the basketball forcing a jump-ball with the alternate possession creating a Siloam Springs turnover. Possession reverted to the Lady Cardinals and they milked the clock, just as Harrison had done to them.

With less than 10 seconds remaining, Vanzant made a move and was fouled. This time, she was only able to hit 1 of 2, but the single point was all Farmington needed to take the lead with 3.9 seconds on the clock. Camryn Journagan made certain Siloam Springs would not get off a shot by stealing their in-bounds pass and time expired with the Lady Cardinals victorious, 53-52.

Vanzant had only two points at halftime, but scored eight in the fourth quarter. Kaylee Brown and Madisyn Pense each shared top-scoring honors for Farmington with 16 points each.

Vaughn had a game-high 21 for Siloam Springs. Chloe Price added 11.

Harrison 55, Farmington 53

Harrison scored 10 of the last 11 points of the game, stealing a 55-53 road win at Cardinal Arena on McKenzie Glenn’s jump shot with two seconds left.

Farmington quickly tried to in- bound, but by the time they took the ball out-of-bounds the clock had expired. Farmington made only 2 of 4 free throws and had three turnovers in the last 3:51 after taking a 52-43 lead. The turnovers included a damaging 5-second violation in-bounding on the side after a Harrison foul. That turnover led to a 3-pointer by Harrison’s Briley Due which drew the Goblins within a point, at 52-51.

Farmington coach Brad Johnson was forced to expend his time-outs. The Lady Cardinals picked up the dribble and nearly had a turnover at the 1:14 mark. The lead went back to two on Makenna Vanzant’s free throw, but the Goblins’ Peri Knight threw a lob to Due posted on the low block. She scored to tie the game at 53- all with 49 seconds remaining. Johnson again had to use a time-out as the Lady Cardinals could not get the ball in against a full-court press. After play resumed, Farmington did get the ball in and could have played for the last shot.

In that situation, someone needs to step up and be willing to make a play. Senior Kaylee Brown courageously asserted herself driving to the goal and stretching out to attempt a layup. The shot just didn’t fall for her and the tables turned with Harrison grabbing the rebound. Harrison coach Doug Young took time-out with 16.2 seconds to go and the Goblins played for the last shot.

Farmington could have fouled, forcing Harrison to make the front end of a 1-and-1 at the free throw line, but that wasn’t Johnson’s strategy. His girls had been good on the defensive glass throughout the game. Still, Harrison’s roster has several good jump- shooters and Glenn timed her 18-feet shot from the left wing perfectly.

Brylie Parker scored a game- high 20 points and Glenn added 12 for Harrison. Vanzant and Madisyn Pense scored 17 points apiece for Farmington.
