Dynamic Duo Lifts Lincoln

HOLY COW, BATGIRL, THERE’S A RUN COMING IN

- By Mark Humphrey

LINCOLN — Holy Cow, Harry Carey, a dynamic duo came up big for Lincoln.

Whack… thack… pow… there’s a runner on base, and here comes the catcher up to bat.

If an opponent could coax her to lift that catcher’s mask long enough to admit she’s not really Batgirl.

Could have fooled the Gentry softball team… holy macaroni, Batgirl,… bam… there’s another run coming in.

Junior Hollie Webb and senior Lexington Dobbs acted as a tag-team combination in the role of a dynamic duo, providing a one-two punch as Lincoln beat Gentry by one run, 5-4, on March 28 in 3A/4A District-1 action.

The recipe for success featured Hollie Webb (3 of 4 with a double) getting on base with Dobbs (1 for 3 with a double and 2 RBIs) batting a run in. Lincoln had 9 hits in all with Hollie Webb scoring 3 runs. Also scoring runs were juniors Tristan Cunningham, who twice reached on an error; and Malorie Pershall (1 of 4), reaching once on an error.

More hits were recorded by junior Madison Jones (2 of 3), and freshman Kinley Webb (2 of 3). Junior Jada Corbit drove in 1 run to help Lincoln pulled out a 1- run win to improve the Lady Wolves’ conference standing in 3A/4A District-1 softball play. The Lady Pioneers put up a good fight, making the contest a very close game but Lincoln held on for the win.

The Lady Pioneers produced 4 runs on 4 hits. Alexis Droddy, April Harris, and Taylor Hull each had a hit but Hull was the only one who could get a run across the plate. Brooke Boston drew a walk and went on to score a run. Hull and Billi Taylor each scored a run for the Lady Pioneers as did pinch-runner Meledy Owens, who was substituted for pitcher Alyssa Kelton, after she had a hit and reached base safely.

Lincoln scored 3 runs in the first inning while keeping Gentry off the scoreboard until the fourth inning. The Lady Pioneers came out swinging during the fourth when all of their runs were scored. The Lady Wolves countered with a run to tie the game, at 4-4, during the fifth inning, and one run during the seventh inning to take the 5-4 win.

Junior Ayden Massey went the distance for Lincoln, pitching all seven innings and striking out 5 batters. Of the 99 pitches she threw, not one hit a batter and she was stingy, giving up only 1 base on balls.

Kelton absorbed the loss for Gentry. She threw 6 and 2/ 3 innings, yielding 5 runs on 7 hits with 2 strike-outs.

Both teams committed 4 errors during the contest.
