Gardeners To Celebrate

-

FAYETTEVILLE — The Washington County Historical Society’s Board of Directors will meet with the Washington County Master Gardeners on Thursday at 6 p.m. for a program celebrating 20 years of volunteer service to the historic gardens of the Headquarters House.

The meeting will be at the Washington County Cooperative Extension Service auditorium, 2536 N. McConnell Ave., (across from the Washington County Fairgrounds).

Kim Smith, president of the Society, and Judy Brittenum, chairwoman of the Garden and Grounds Committee, will be presiding.

Master Gardener Jan Lefler will present a written and visual history of the Master Gardeners activities at the Headquarters House, 118 E. Dickson St., over the past 20 years. The Headquarters House, an 1853 Greek Revival style home, is in the middle of the Fayetteville Washington-Willow Historic District. The home was built by Judge Jonas Tebbetts and served as a Headquarters House during the Civil War.

Master Gardeners have been working on the gardens at the Headquarters House the last 20 years, resulting in an historically accurate type of gardens as would have been seen in the time that the Tebbetts family lived in the 1853-style home.

All of the past chairs of the Master Gardeners who supervised work at the Headquarters House will be present. This joint meeting will be a precursor to free guided garden tours of the Headquarters House on June 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Past members of the Washington County Master Gardeners and the Washington County Historical Society are urged to attend this joint meeting. Refreshments will be served following the presentations.
