Harrison Pounds Farmington With Run Game

- By Mark Humphrey

Harrison pounded Farmington with the run game as sophomore runningback Gabe Huskey (5-10, 170) rushed for 341 yards and scored on touchdown runs of 44, 43, 36 and 6 yards.

The onslaught dashed hopes of Farmington reaching the 5A playoffs for the first time and extending the season for coach Mike Adams, still looking for his 200th career win. Harrison’s 42-24 win ended Farmington’s 2017 football season with the Cardinals (4-6, 3-4 5A West) one win away from qualifying for the playoffs and three wins short of 200 for Adams (197138-2).

Despite getting a turnover with senior strong safety Skylar Montez’ interception in the first quarter, Farmington couldn’t move the football and punted. Gabe Huskey set up his own 6-yard rushing touchdown with a 60-yard run. The P.A.T. was good and the Goblins led 7-0. They were on the move again to start the second quarter. Farmington forced a turnover on downs, but coughed up the football when Harrison senior Caleb Huskey intercepted a Cardinal pass which turned into a defensive touchdown on the runback of 20 yards putting the Goblins out front, 14-0.

Midway through the second quarter Farmington recovered a Harrison fumble, but again couldn’t take advantage of the turnover and punted the football away. The last three minutes of the first half saw both teams score. Harrison extended its lead to 21-0 with Gabe Huskey scoring on a 26-yard pass from Noah Ditmanson. Farmington answered with Caleb Williams’ 2-yard rushing touchdown in the final minute to cut the deficit to 21-6 at intermission.

Farmington had the first possession to start the second half, but couldn’t sustain a drive and punted. Harrison took over and drove for another rushing score. Gabe Huskey’s 33-yard run pushed Harrison’s lead out to 28-6. A Farmington turnover on downs led to another Huskey rushing touchdown, this one of 43 yards. Just as they had in the final minute of the second quarter, the Cardinals put a touchdown on the board in the last minute of the third. The score came by air on a Drew Sturgeon 14-yard pass from Trey Waggle, but a 2-point conversion failed, leaving the Cardinals down, 35-12.

The Cardinals tried to get momentum but failed to recover an onside kick. Gabe Huskey broke a 44-yard touchdown run at the end of the quarter and Harrison went up, 42-12. Farmington scored on Jacob Gray 10-yard pass from Waggle early in the fourth, then recovered a second Harrison fumble in the game. The Cardinals added another score on Williams’ 13-yard run to trim the lead to 42-24, but couldn’t convert a 2-point try.
