- By Mark Humphrey

PRAIRIE GROVE — Three days after suffering a 28-point loss at home, the Prairie Grove girls basketball team reversed the scenario by pounding tournament host Scranton, 44-15.

“We beat Scranton, we were a lot better than them,” said Prairie Grove coach Kevin Froud. “We made some shots and they weren’t used to pressure.”

The Lady Tigers put a dozen points up in the opening quarter of the first game of Thursday’s double-header at the Scranton tournament. Although their scoring fell off in the second quarter, they owned a 16-8 halftime lead which they extended to 31-13 after three quarters. Eight players scored for Prairie Grove led by Jordan Sugg with 9. Meliah Hutsell and Sarah James Stone chipped in 8 apiece. Stone had 6 rebounds and Sugg recorded 4 steals.

The Lady Tigers didn’t fare as well in the second game of the double-header, losing 46-32, to Charleston, which led 42-23 after three quarters.

“We couldn’t score, we couldn’t hit any shots,” Froud said.

Prairie Grove concluded the tournament by rebounding for a 38-35 win over Dardanelle Saturday. The win was important, coming on the heels of a 49-40 loss at Elkins Friday. Freshman Aniyah Gibbs scored 20 points against Elkins and showed sparks of her potential.

“She hasn’t had a lot of experience playing varsity yet,” Froud said, adding, “She’s getting that. I feel her best is ahead of her.”
