FARMINGTON — Greenwood dished out a 44-31 defeat to the Farmington boys basketball team when the Class 6A Bulldogs came to town Tuesday, Jan. 9.

Farmington held an early 6-5 lead when Xavier Staten and Skyler Montez opened the game with 3-pointers. Neil Rice scored and Jordan Sheppard hit a 3-pointer for Greenwood as the Bulldogs moved in front, 10-6. Farmington’s Peyton Maxwell drove to the goal, then pulled up to nail a trifecta giving Farmington its last lead at 11-10 with 3:05 to go in the first. Consecutive field goals by Jack Gaston and a Sheppard finish at the rim restored Greenwood into the lead. Farmington sophomore Austin Shelley put in a missed 3-pointer, but the Bulldogs milked the clock and Sheppard got to the basket in the waning seconds to put Greenwood ahead, 18-13, at the end of the first quarter.

Shelley posted up, scored with a turnaround shot, and added a free throw, but the Cardinals were outscored 6-3 over the first four minutes of the second. Staten and Maxwell converted reverse lay-ups off drives and Mason Downs contributed a two-handed tip-in, but the Cardinals couldn’t close the gap and Greenwood went into the half holding a 29-22 lead. The Cardinal defense kept them in the contest for a long time. They trailed 33-25 after three quarters, but a lack of scoring punch in the fourth prevented them from making a run.
