Berryville Edges Lincoln Girls In Soccer
LINCOLN — Berryville slipped past Lincoln’s firstyear high school soccer team 2-0 Thursday, April 5, with head coach Emilianne Slamons pleased as she continues to see progress.
The Lady Wolves are technically a junior varsity team playing against mostly varsity competition because most area schools don’t have a JV team. Lincoln is 0-2-1 on the year, not a bad start for an inaugural year.
Lincoln lost at Prairie Grove, 5-0, in the seasonopener March 6, then earned a 1-1 tie at Eureka Springs March 26.
Sophomore Arianna Ortiz had an assist and classmate Daisy Salazar scored a goal at Eureka Springs.
Thursday’s matches were make-up games from the previous week.
According to Slamons, Berryville had parentteacher conferences and requested a rescheduling to which Lincoln agreed.
“The biggest thing is we just keep getting better, which is important,” Slamons said. “Any big or small skill they’re getting better at is huge. Today, we focused on great shape on the defensive end, which was great because we only let them score two goals. Only two goals in 70 minutes of soccer is good.”
BOYS
Slamons also coaches Lincoln’s boys team (0-2-1), which also played a match against Berryville Thursday and lost 6-0.
Coming into the match Slamons expected a tough challenge.
“This Berryville team is good,” she said. “They went pretty far in the state tournament so this will be a good matchup for our boys to see how they match up with them.”
OVERALL
Despite growing pains, the sport is picking up steam.
“Lincoln has a new sport, soccer, and these kids are loving it,” Slamons said.
