Guild Hosts One-Day Writers Con­fer­ence

Siloam Springs Writers Guild will host its sec­ond an­nual Sum­mer Writers’ Con­fer­ence, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Satur­day, June 16, at Siloam Springs First Bap­tist Church, 2000 Dawn Hill Road.

The theme of the con­fer­ence is “Chas­ing the Dream: the Road to Suc­cess!”

Key­note speaker will be Dr. Patsy Watkins, as­so­ciate pro­fes­sor of print (mag­a­zine) jour­nal­ism at the Uni­ver­sity of Arkansas. Her teach­ing ar­eas in­clude me­dia ethics, com­puter-as­sisted graph­ics, pe­ri­od­i­cal pub­li­ca­tions, and graphic de­sign. Her re­search has fo­cused on vis­ual com­mu­ni­ca­tion in news pho­tog­ra­phy and pub­li­ca­tion de­sign.

Pro­fes­sion­ally, Watkins has worked in news­pa­per re­port­ing, mag­a­zine edit­ing, free­lance graphic de­sign, ra­dio and uni­ver­sity pub­lic re­la­tions. She has pub­lished about 30 books of po­etry and short stories.

Other speak­ers are Roy Lessin, Carolyn Steele and Jen­nifer McMur­rain.

Lessin started a Chris­tian pub­lish­ing com­pany called Out­reach Pub­li­ca­tion in Cov­ina, Calif. The com­pany cre­ated a Christ­mas card that was the be­gin­ning of DaySpring Cards.

Steele presents pro­grams de­signed to in­spire oth­ers to pre­serve an­ces­tral le­gends. She has won nu­mer­ous awards and had count­less short stories pub­lished.

McMur­rain has won nu­mer­ous awards for her short stories and nov­els.
