Young Lady Tigers Volleyballers Asked To Grow Up Quick
PRAIRIE GROVE — On Aug. 27, Prairie Grove handed Lincoln a 25-8, 25-16 and 25-10 loss as the Lady Tigers took on their U.S. 62 rival to the west.
The Lady Wolves swept Prairie Grove to end the 2017 regular season and the Lady Tigers were anxious to show their game. Sophomore Madison Hutchison dished out 11 of the Lady Tigers’ 27 assists. Prairie Grove served 9 aces. Three players had two apiece: junior Samantha Blosser, Hutchison, and sophomore Makinsey Parnell.
“We played one of our better matches all year, the girls were up for it obviously,” said Prairie Grove coach Mat Stewart. “Lincoln, we consider a rival as well as Farmington and I think last year was pretty disappointing to them, didn’t play well; but again Lincoln played well last year. We just came out and clicked really well that night, passed well, served well, and that definitely helped us.”
Sophomore Sydney Stearman accounted for 11 of Prairie Grove’s 40 digs. Prairie Grove had 8 blocks led by junior Jansen Williams with 4.
“Defensively, I feel like we have one of the better liberos in the league, Sydney Stearman, just a sophomore, extremely quick and athletic,” Stewart said. “Her passing has improved so much since the summer. She’s put in the work and she’s doing a great job.”
Senior Sophia Nunziato pounded 11 kills while sophomores Lexi Light (6) and Kennedy Conrad (5) equalled that number with their combined efforts. Stewart noted Nunziato is one of the most experienced Lady Tigers and an offensive leader.
“Hitting-wise, Sophia Nunziato, one of our seniors, one of our two that played quite a bit, outside hitter, she gets a good set she’s going to put it down,” Stewart said. “She is our kill leader on the year.”
And then we have another senior, our setter Emma Maraver and she is a move-in from Spain, and she’s definitely helped us a lot. They like volleyball in Spain so she’s helped us.”
