PRAIRIE GROVE — Farmington defeated Prairie Grove, 20-8, in the seventh grade football edition of the ‘Battle of 62’ rivalry on Thursday, Sept. 5, at Prairie Grove’s Tiger Den Stadium.

Tailback Anthony Whetstone scored three rushing touchdowns for the Cardinals. He busted a long run on Farmington’s first drive and the Cardinals tacked on a 2-point run for an early 8-0 lead. His second touchdown came on another long carry of better than 70 yards extending Farmington’s lead to 14-0.

“I had a bunch of blockers and it was easy for me to score,” Whetstone said. “I’m just doing what I do.”

Prairie Grove came away with a fumble recovery with 1:36 left in the first half and sent out its offense at the Cardinal 37. A wingback reverse netted the Tigers 7 yards, but they were held for a 2-yard gain and had to use third down to convert. The half ended with a Tiger runningback tackled after a 9-yard gain to the Cardinal 17.

The score remained 14-0 throughout the third quarter. Midway through the fourth Whetstone took a pitch running a sweep to the far side of the field and burst loose for his third touchdown run of 46 yards.

Parker Dougan got the Tigers on the scoreboard with a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 46 seconds left in the game. Prairie Grove added a 2-point conversion run around left end to make the final, 20-8.

Whetstone said he enjoyed a “phenomenal year” as a sixth grader, but his goal is to exceed that as a seventh grader.

“This is the best season I have right now,” Whetstone said.
