Farmington To Host District Tennis

- By Mark Humphrey

FARMINGTON — Farmington hosts the 4A-1 District tournament Oct. 1-3 this week with some early round action played on the city’s new tennis courts at Creekside Park.

Having the additional facilities available will allow the Cardinals to play host which, according to Farmington tennis coach Denver Holt, may be first time Farmington has hosted the district tournament.

“To my knowledge, I believe so. We’re able to do that with in conjunction with the City of Farmington which has graciously allowed us to use those two brand new courts that they have put in for the public and after speaking with Sherry Matthews and the mayor, they understand the importance of what that experience is going to be like for our kids and our community and they’ve given us the OK to do that,” Holt said. “I’m extremely excited about that because to my knowledge it’s never been done and I think it’s going to be great for the kids and the community of Farmington.”

Farmington Mayor Ernie Penn is excited about growth in both city infrastructure with improvements to Creekside Park and within the school district, which completed its $16 million Farmington Sports Complex and Cardinal Stadium as part of Phase III at the new high school campus along State Highway 170.

“It’s a great thing and we have the kind of relationship that it’s not us and not them. It’s us together and if we have any issues we sit down, talk about it, work together. We need to raise money, we raise money,” Penn said. “That’s the blessing that we’ve had that our city’s been very well blessed with revenue and so has the school, and that growth has to continue for the school to prosper. Same way for the city.”

Penn said the city is putting in bleachers for fans to watch the district tournament matches at Creekside Park.

Farmington’s regular season home matches have been held at the school’s courts off Double Springs Road.

The seeding meeting was held Sept. 27 and coming into the 4A-1 District tournament, Holt said it would be interesting to see how seedings worked out.

“Everybody’s taken some lumps along the way,” he said.

Holt invites tennis fans to attend day two of the tournament Thursday, Oct. 3 at the high school tennis courts on Double Springs Road.

“The general public can come out and watch,” Holt said. “There will be some good competition.”
