Lady Cards Upended In Tourney Semifinal

- By Mark Humphrey

FARMINGTON — Farmington sustained only its second loss of the girls basketball season, 61-46, to Rogers Dec. 27 during the First Arkansas Bail Bonds Invitational at Mountain Home.

Every cloud has its silver lining and Farmington coach Brad Johnson liked playing up against a tough opponent because the matchup provided experience for his players. One type of player his roster doesn’t contain is a big body, which Brad Johnson admits, sometimes mandates the Lady Cardinals must get a little creative with dropping help in from different areas to defend the post

“That kind of goes back to some of our nonconference stuff, Brad Johnson said. “While we were out at Mountain Home, we had to play against some big, physical post kids and we needed it because ultimately we’re going to have to take that back in conference and see some of those.”

The Lady Mounties got a combined nine 3-pointers from Kate McConnell and Camiran Brockhoff while limiting Farmington to 26 points through the first three quarters. Going into the fourth, the Lady Cardinals faced a 42-26 deficit after trailing 25-16 at intermission.

Rogers led by as many as 21 points on Taylor Treadwell’s basket that made it 47-26. Makenna Vanzant tried to rally the Lady Cardinals by scoring 15 points in the fourth but the teams mostly traded baskets and Farmington could not offset the earlier Rogers 12-2 run during the tourney semifinal.

Brockhoff and McConnell finished with 17 points each to lead Rogers, while Vanzant topped Farmington with a game-high 25 points. Carr 2 1-4 5, Aubrey Treadwell 1
