Running Offense Through Shelley

- By Mark Humphrey

FARMINGTON — Farmington got 17 points apiece from Logan Landwehr and Carson Simmons to pace the Cardinals to a 59-35 win over Huntsville on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Both players were in form with each hitting a trio of 3- pointers. Four different players scored to start the game off with balance in the first period led by Marqwaveon Watson’s two treys. The Cardinals ( 11-7, 5-2) led 12- 9 after one period then gained separation by outscoring Huntsville 34-15 in the second and third quarters to take a 46-24 lead into the fourth quarter.

Cardinal big man, 6-foot-7 Austin Shelley chipped in 8 points. When the ball goes through his hands in the Cardinal offense set up in the post good things happen.

“We really shot the ball well. First time I think I’ve ever had a team shoot a better percentage from three than we did two,” said Farmington coach Beau Thompson. “Watson shot the ball well, two threes; Simmons four threes, we really just took what they gave us. They sunk in a lot. We got a size advantage on them so they really sink in to help with Shelley on the inside and usually when ‘50’ (Shelley) touches it in the right spot, if we can get ‘50’ the ball on the block in the right spot he doesn’t always necessarily score, but we usually get good shots. He gets other people real good shots.”

The Cardinals owned a 28-15 cushion at the halftime break after dialing up four threes in the second. Farmington would hit nine 3- pointers for the game. Again there was balanced scoring with four players contributing points.

In the third quarter, Farmington leaned on Simmons, who scored 9 points, and Landwehr, who kept the Cardinals from becoming one-dimensional with 7 points in the period. DeCory Thomas gave Farmington a lift with 4 points in the fourth.

Huntsville (14-7, 5-2) got 14 points from Matthew Sisk. The victory enabled Farmington to pull even with Huntsville in the 4A-1 Conference standings. Both teams were 5-2 in league play coming into Friday, Jan. 31.
