PRAIRIE GROVE — Sophomore center Olivia Kestner scored 13 points and pulled down 8 rebounds to lead the Lady Tigers to a 37-24 win in 4A-1 Conference play at Huntsville on Jan. 7.

Both teams had trouble finding the basket with Prairie Grove holding a 5-4 edge after one quarter and 12-8 at halftime in a low-scoring game. Prairie Grove earned a little bit of separation by outscoring the Lady Eagles by a 2-to-1 margin (14-7) during a pivotal third quarter.

Lady Tiger coach Kevin Froud noted his girls’ success finding the basket while continuing to prevent Huntsville from scoring during the quarter played a large role in deciding the outcome.

“We kind of started out slow still not making shots, but Huntsville was having trouble scoring,” Froud said. “Second half we were able to extend the lead ‘cause we made a little run there where we scored six or eight straight points and keeping them from scoring and got the lead.”

Prairie Grove led 26-15 going into the fourth quarter.

The game was well in hand before Huntsville scored the last nine points on a trio of 3-pointers. Kendra Poor made the first two trifectas then Josie Sisk added one more before the final buzzer. Prior to that flurry Prairie Grove held the Lady Eagles scoreless from beyond the arc.

No matter, Prairie Grove emerged with a 37-24 conference win.

Sophomore Trinity Dobbs scored 10 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals while junior Jasmine Wynos added 6 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

Prairie Grove came into conference play off a 1-1 performance at the Siloam Springs Holiday Classic. On Jan. 3 the Lady Tigers dished out a 47-41 defeat to Providence Academy.

“We played good defense and was able to score. We scored. You know that’s been our Achilles heel is scoring and we were able to make some baskets and get a lead and we played real good defense and was able to hold on to the end,” Froud said.

Things didn’t go as well facing tourney host Siloam Springs. Plagued by turnovers Prairie Grove also struggled to score and lost 44-18 on

Jan. 4.

“We played good for a quarter and then we just turned the ball over. Once again, we just couldn’t hit shots, couldn’t make free throws, couldn’t make shots and Siloam did and that was the difference in the game,” Froud said.
