Washington County Enterprise-Leader

Thank You, George & Lorene

- MARIE ROY WCEL Columnist

The best we can remember, it was about 28 years ago that George and Lorene Schooler organized the Lincoln Senior Center Kitchen Band. (a short time after we built the new building in 1991.)

It was a time of fun and entertainment for those many years. In addition to meeting every Tuesday for “practice” and fun, they entertained for other Senior Centers in N.W. Arkansas — Springdale, Fayetteville, Elkins, Farmington, Prairie Grove, West Fork, and Siloam Springs, as well as Westville, Okla., and other rest homes; also special celebrations such as birthday specials were enjoyed, and one time at a County meeting, they won a beautiful glass chicken as a prize.

Disrupted for a time some years ago, they didn’t meet, but for George and Lorene’s wedding anniversary, the group surprised them with

Nadine Tennant playing the piano and all singing, “I’ll Fly Away,” one of the group’s special songs. This spurred the interest to start again.

But, sadly, due to lack of interest, and the old adage “there comes a time,” the Band is no longer meeting, but the memories linger, of when there was a time when it took the 15- passenger Center bus, and extra cars, to take the band to other places.

It seems that just “thank you” is not enough but we do so appreciate George and Lorene’s hard work and time to keep it going. May they be blessed accordingly.

I wonder how many overslept Sunday morning. From the comments (complaints?) I heard, if it could be put to a vote, the “time” would stay in place — no change.

Happy birthday to Justin Spear, Hudson Cheatham, Mary Newberry, Mary Lauren Bradley, Carol Meyer, Elmer Williams, Richard Watson, Sam King, Seth Latta, Paul Brakebill.

Happy anniversary to Donald and Denise Mounce.

Happy years, all!
