Lady Cardinals Engineer Runs

- By Mark Humphrey

FARMINGTON — Farmington’s ability to generate runs empowered the Lady Cardinals to pull away from Providence Academy, 70-43, in nonconference girls basketball play on Nov. 12.

Trinity Johnson singed the nets for seven 3-pointers and 25 points with Tori Kersey adding 16 and Carson Dillard 15.

Farmington coach Brad Johnson was pleased with the improvement he saw noting the team had 18 turnovers in their first game of the season against Fort Smith Southside.

“We basically cut our turnovers in half. The game was fast and five or six of our turnovers came in one stretch,” Brad Johnson said. “I felt we were very surgical with our game knowing where we wanted to go.”

Providence Academy traded baskets with Farmington and actually held an 11-10 lead before Farmington went on a 10-4 run over the last 2:24 of the first quarter. Trinity Johnson started the spree with a trifecta in the corner. Morgan Brye cut to the hoop for a layup and Carson Dillard added a three of her own.

“Early on in the game they had a run on us. I thought we did a good job of stopping that run and countering on throughout the course of the game,” Brad Johnson said.

Providence Academy scored two baskets, then Trinity Johnson raced downcourt and literally made a layup on her knees when a defender bumped her. No foul was called, but the shot went in and Farmington captured a 20-15 lead going into the second quarter.

A 17-5 run during the latter half of the second quarter put some distance between the Lady Cardinals and Providence Academy. Fifteen of those points came in a 2:42 span. Johnson rang up a trio of 3-pointers, Kersey cashed in on a 3-point play and Dillard knocked down a trey. Farmington led 44-25 at the half.

Trinity Johnson made a pair of 3-pointers in the third while Kersey chipped in 5 points by pounding the offensive glass and took a 66-32 lead going into the fourth quarter.
