Prairie Grove Withstands Snodgrass’ 37 Points

- By Mark Humphrey

PRAIRIE GROVE — Prairie Grove orchestrated a tremendous turnaround flipping a 20-9 deficit with a 31-12 second quarter explosion to take control and win a rivalry game against Lincoln, 59-50, on Dec. 8.

A win would have given Lincoln a two- game win streak in the rivalry, something which hasn’t happened in years.

“They tried awful hard. The Snodgrass girl she had a great game. She ended up with 30-something. She banked one in from halfcourt, hit a 30-footer that bounced in up off the rim a couple of times, so she was feeling it tonight. She’s going to be a good player for just a ninth grader,” said Prairie Grove coach Kevin Froud.

The Tuesday night nonconference girls basketball contest pitted Lincoln freshman sensation Sarah Snodgrass, who scored a varsity career- high 38 points, against Prairie Grove superstar Trinity Dobbs.

Snodgrass singed the nets for 20 first quarter points starting and ending the period with 3-point shots. In between she made 7-of-7 free throws. Lincoln’s aggressive style of offense received a reward in the form of 11 freethrows attempted in the first quarter.

Dobbs, who made a pair of 3-pointers and accounted for all 9 of Prairie Grove points in the first, led the Lady Tiger counter- attack in the second quarter. Dobbs scored 11 points and six teammates joined her in building a 31-point output in the second quarter. Torie Price scored 6 and Ella Faulk added 4 points. The Lady Tigers shot 10 free-throws in the period and took a 40-32 halftime lead, a feat which seemed improbable eight minutes earlier.

The exchange of offensive production excited fans anxious to see how the second half might play out. The pace slowed considerably during the third quarter. Dobbs put the Lady Tigers up by a dozen points, 47-35, then committed her third foul challenging a drive by Lincoln’s Landree Cunningham.

The Lady Wolves made 3-of-6 free-throws in about a minute- and- a- half, but still trailed by nine, at 47-38. Lincoln sophomore Saylor Stidham forced a turnover and Cunningham caused a turnover via an alternate possession when she tied up a Lady Tiger in-bounds play underneath their own basket.

Prairie Grove couldn’t score with either possession. Snodgrass’ left-handed layup cut the lead to seven 45 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Price asserted herself offensively in the fourth. She slipped into the key for a basket and hit a 3-pointer from the wing boosting Prairie Grove out to a 52-40 advantage with 6:12 remaining.

Snodgrass answered for Lincoln with an old- fashioned 3- point play. Price made 3- of- 4 free throws while Snodgrass sank a pair from the foul line for

Lincoln and Cunningham scored to cut the margin to 54-47 at the 3:23 mark.

Prairie Grove got two big buckets within 36 seconds to again widen its lead to 12 points. Zoe Hubbs caught a lob under the goal and Dobbs, playing with 4 fouls, came up with an offensive rebound off a missed free throw. Standing in traffic, she used a quick spin move to duck in front of the rim and lay the ball in.

“That was a very nice move that she made, got the rebound and finished and scored,” Froud said.

Snodgrass got a long three to bounce in with 1:58 showing reducing the difference to nine points. Lincoln created turnovers twice in the last 1: 20 but couldn’t score and lost 59-50.

“We got down 20-9 in the first quarter. At halftime we were up 40-32. We woke up a little bit, started making plays, scoring. The girls were playing hard. We just couldn’t hit some shots [in the first quarter],” Froud said. “Second half, it was just kind of back and forth. Snodgrass versus Dobbs, but when she ( Dobbs)

went [out] in foul trouble, we had Torie Price step up and made some good plays, made some free throws, made a big 3- pointer and Zoe Hubbs made a couple of put-ins so we’re learning. We’re getting better playing a lot of juniors and sophomores.”
