Farmington schools:

Preparing students for the future

- Jon Laffoon Farmington Superintendent BY RANDY RICE SPECIAL TO WASHINGTON COUNTY ENTERPRISE LEADER

Farmington is one of the fastest growing school districts in the state. They provide students with individualized instruction through highly qualified teachers, advanced technology resources, and a career emphasis. Superintendent Jon Laffoon is in his second year heading up this exciting and expanding school district.

“Here in Farmington, we strive to prepare our students to pursue their dreams with an emphasis on career interests that will make the students’ learning more relevant to their future,” said Laffoon. “In particular, I invite prospective parents and students to take note of our outstanding achievement scores, the many programs provided, the commitment to reading district wide, and the wonderful extracurricular activities that we provide.”

With the recent rise in COVID-19 cases, the pandemic remains a very real concern to educators and parents alike. Superintendent Laffoon wants to assure everyone that the district is planning to keep students and staff as safe as possible. “The district has committed over $2 million to replacing HVAC and filters with new, safer equipment on our campuses,” he noted. “We also have held staff and community vaccine clinics and have protocols in place for enhanced cleaning. After we receive state guidance, we will reconvene our ready for Learning Committee and finalize district COVID protocols.”

Regarding academics, teachers and the administration staff have been gearing up for the new school year by participating in professional development, at both the district level and the building level. Grade level teams and departments are planning for instruction and pacing. They are all excited to get to the business of helping the students develop the confidence to pursue their dreams.

And while the superintendent and his team prepare to welcome students back this year, the school district is not taking its eyes off of the future. Farmington Public Schools is currently seeking land to build a new elementary school. “Our goal is to complete this new campus by 2025,” Laffoon said. “Farmington is growing at a rapid rate and our need for additional facilities is a priority to best serve our community. We are currently finalizing plans to expand our two elementary schools as well as our junior high school and that construction will begin in December. This will provide us with additional space, but a new elementary school is inevitable in order to keep up with population growth in the community.”

The superintendent is proud of the fact that the district has a strong focus on literacy and an impressive selection of secondary elective course offerings. These classes include computer programming, engineering, biomedical sciences, emergency medical responder, agriculture,

EAST, and career courses with Northwest Technical Institute right on campus. The goal of the district is to make the student’s educational experience a great one.

“We can’t wait to see the students,” Laffoon concluded. “We will work to keep them safe, although we know no mitigation strategy is perfect when facing this pandemic. Our mission is to positively impact their educational experience and we will strive to reach every student. Let’s have a great 2022. And please help us keep everyone safe and let us help you get involved in our great schools.”
