Paint­ings by Ar­min Hansen, Wil­liam Wendt and Birger Sandzén among the high­lights of Bon­hams’ spring Cal­i­for­nia and Western art sale.

On April 24, Bon­hams will host its first Cal­i­for­nia and Western Paint­ings & Sculp­ture auc­tion of 2018. The sale, tak­ing place in Los An­ge­les and simul­cast in San Fran­cisco, will fea­ture ap­prox­i­mately 150 lots of art­work by some of the icons of the South­west. Many of the artists made their names by liv­ing in or paint­ing the re­gion, with the sale boast­ing art­work by lead­ing Cal­i­for­nia Im­pres­sion­ists from across the state as well as artists whose Western sub­jects have pro­pelled them to the fore­front of Amer­i­can art.

“Com­ing off a tremen­dously ro­bust year, we’re pleased to put together an­other im­pres­sive auc­tion of top-qual­ity works,” says Scot Le­vitt, di­rec­tor of fine arts at Bon­hams. “We hope to meet the high ex­pec­ta­tions and dis­cern­ing tastes of to­day’s col­lec­tors and are ex­cited by the stun­ning works we have sourced thus far.”

In the Western seg­ment of the sale will be a group of bronzes by Ed­ward Fraughton and Clark Bron­son, while an en­er­getic rodeo scene ti­tled Sali­nas Rodeo, by Ar­min Hansen, high­lights the paint­ing cat­e­gory. The work, which fea­tures Hansen’s char­ac­ter­is­tic brush­work and color, was re­cently in a ma­jor Cal­i­for­nia ret­ro­spec­tive for the artist and has
