Now celebrating its 42nd year, Montecristi Custom Hat Works of Santa Fe offers authentic Panama hats that set the standard for quality and heritage, as well as genuine fur felt hats. Alone among even luxury hatmakers, Montecristi works exclusively by hand, which ensures that each hat they create is unique.

A Montecristi Panama hat begins its journey in a small village in Ecuador. Expert hat weavers harvest the unopened shoots from the paja toquilla plant, then work them again and again to create fine straw fibers of uniform width and color. These are woven in an extremely tight and even pattern to create the body of the hat—a process that can take months.

The final step is the precise shaping of the hat to fit the customer’s exact specifications. This is performed in the Santa Fe shop by craftsmen with decades of experience. The result is a masterpiece of hatmaking artistry that can last a lifetime.

Montecristi Custom Hat Works takes equal pride in their fur felt hats. They offer hats in blended fur felts, pure beaver, and the finest beaver and mink blends. All styles are available in both straw and fur felt.

The shop invites customers to visit their location near the Georgia O’keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, and learn more about some of the finest custom-made hats available.

Each Montecristi hat is customized to customer’s unique specifications.
