Artist and alpinist Dave Mcnally left the Midwest in 1980 and relocated to Jackson, Wyoming. The essential connection with nature, in particular the mountains, is the primary source of inspiration for Mcnally’s life and art. Upon his first glimpse of the Grand Teton he realized he had to see what the world looked like from the summit and knew that he was going to be a climber. Combining his passions for art and the mountains, he has since traveled the world climbing and painting the mountains and the people that live in them. In 1988, he was invited to join the Wyoming Centennial Everest Expedition as a climber and expedition artist to record the journey in oil paintings. This was a life-altering experience, and today he is a veteran of expeditions to some of the highest mountains in the world and owner of the Himalayan guide service, Mountain Odyssey Treks & Expeditions. Leading trips to the great mountains,
Mcnally continues to gather inspiration for the studio. “Living life in high places has taught me many lessons, not the least of which is perseverance. And perseverance is an absolute necessity in art,” Mcnally says. Since the 1970s he has exhibited at the C.M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana; the Jackson Hole Center for the Arts; the National Museum of Wildlife Art Western Visions
Miniature Show; and has been a finalist in the Arts for the Parks competition. He has been represented by Jackson-based galleries Horizon Fine Art, Wilcox Gallery, Mountain Trails, Buffalo Trails, Vertical Peaks, and American Legends Gallery as well as Going to the Sun Gallery in Whitefish, Montana.
