Maynard Dixon’s West

Programming for Western Spirit’s hit Maynard Dixon exhibition continues in Scottsdale, Arizona.

-

When it opened in October 2019, Maynard Dixon’s American West was an instant hit and a watershed moment for the legacy of Maynard Dixon, one of the most influential Western painters to pick up a brush. Throughout February, Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West will continue to support the popular and critically praised exhibition with additional programming and educational opportunities.

On February 1 the museum will screen Maynard Dixon Art & Spirit, a feature-length documentary that profiles the art and complex life of the artist. Narrated by actress Diane Keaton, the film will provide a revealing look into his life and career, as well as the careers of two of his wives, photographer

Dorothea Lange and Edith Hamlin. The screening begins at 2 p.m. The film will also screen on March 21 and April 25.

On February 28, the museum will host a presentation in which Mark Sublette will have a discussion of Dixon as it relates to Sublette’s new book on the artist, Maynard Dixon’s American West: Along the Distant Mesa. Sublette, the owner of Medicine Man Gallery in Tucson, Arizona, is an authority on Dixon and the owner of the Maynard Dixon Museum. The presentation is an in-depth look at the life, poetry, artwork and personal struggles of the iconic artist. The program will be followed by a signing of Sublette’s book. The event begins at 1 p.m. on February 28.
