A City Different

- Michael Clawson Michael Clawson Executive Editor mclawson@westernartcollector.com

There is no place in the world like Santa Fe, New Mexico. Other cities might have great art, delicious food and beautiful culture, but Santa Fe has all three, and so much more. And the more you visit the City Different the more it unfolds for you, opening up new areas of exploration and discovery. And to think, that little desert city can rival Paris, New York City and Rome when it comes to art, history and culture!

This month is our New Mexico issue, and while we look at the whole state, all roads lead to Santa Fe, which will celebrate 100 years of Santa Fe Indian Market in August. Preparations for this milestone have been ongoing for several years. (Of course, they were interrupted by Covid, but everyone has been soldiering forward with a resilient spirit.) Galleries, museums, hotels and all of the cultural destinations are planning on rolling out the red carpet for visitors during the lead-up to this summer. Western Art Collector will be there, as will our sister publications, Native American

Art magazine, American Art Collector and American Fine Art Magazine. Every gallery opening, every museum opening, every art fair—we will be there.

For this issue, we put together a comprehensive calendar of shows and events between now and the end of the year in New Mexico. There are Western shows on the list, as well as shows for Native American artists, and even some shows that lean toward more contemporary artwork. The beauty of Santa Fe is that all these genres fit nicely together, interlocking into a magnificent picture of the Southwest. If you find yourself in Santa Fe this year, and I hope you do, I encourage you to stop by as many galleries you can. Not just the galleries that show the work you are interested in. Step into a gallery that might challenge your tastes or expand your definition of what Western art can be. I’ve never been disappointed with seeing new artwork.

I hope to see you in Santa Fe this year. The year-long party has started, and it’s only going to get better from here on out.
