Many great artists live in and around Prescott, Arizona, but one artist is cherished all around town, and has been for more than 70 years. That artist is George Phippen, the famous sculptor, painter and co-founder of the Cowboy Artists of America.

Phippen died in 1966, just one year after helping start the CAA, but his legacy in Western art has lasted several generations since then, particularly in the Prescott area, which is home to a number of his most important monuments and a museum that bears his name, the Phippen Museum.

On November 19, the Phippen Museum will present a special night dedicated to the artist as it screens the movie Prescott, Arizona: Mecca of Western Art.

The documentary chronicles the making of Cowboy in a Storm, one of Phippen’s most famous bronze monuments. After the screening, there will be a panel of prominent Northern Arizona artists talking about the film, Phippen and his legacy, why art flourishes so well in the Prescott area and other topics related to Western art. The artists are John Coleman, Bill Nebeker and Bill

Anton. The discussion will be moderated by Michael Clawson, executive editor of Western Art Collector.

The screening will take place at Prescott’s Elks Theatre & Performing Arts Center. Tickets for the event, as well as the reception that will follow it, can be purchased at www.prescottelkstheatre.org/ theatre-events.
