Gentry teams finish season

GENTRY — The basketball season ended for the Gentry girls on Feb. 14 in district tournament play against Huntsville at Lincoln when the Lady Pioneers were knocked out of the tournament in a 41-31 first-round loss to the Lady Eagles.

Though Gentry was down 18-11 after the first half, the Lady Pioneers picked up 14 points in the third quarter on threepoint­ers by Kya DeZurik and Ariel Nix, a pair of deuces by Chastery Fuamatu, a deuce by Hannah Boss and two free-throws by DeZurik, to come within one point at 26-25.

But the Lady Eagles dominated the final quarter of play with 15 points and held the Lady Pioneers to a three-pointer by Boss and a deuce and a free throw by Fuamatu, to finish off the Lady Pioneers, 41-31.

Fuamatu led the Pioneers with 13 points in the game. DeZurik had eight, Boss five, Nix three and Hayley Hays two.

The Lady Pioneers finished their season at 16-11 overall and 14-5 in conference play. The Pioneers dominated their opening tournament game on Feb. 13 against the Pea Ridge Blackhawks, that is, until the final quarter of play, with the Gentry Pioneers knocked out of the district competitio­n in a 52-47 loss at Lincoln High School.

The Pioneers were tied at eight after the first quarter, but a big second quarter for the Pioneers gave them an eight-point advantage going into the second half of the game, 26-18. It was 36-29 in favor of Gentry after three quarters, but the Blackhawks came back in the final quarter to score 23 points to the Pioneers’ 11 and take away the win.
