Bulldogs notch first conference match against Trojans
DECATUR — It would prove to be a very physical soccer contest when the Subiaco Academy Trojans rolled into Decatur March 15 to meet the Bulldogs in the first conference match at Bulldog Stadium. When the dust settled 80 minutes later, the Bulldogs emerged victorious over the Trojans by two.
The Bulldogs took control of the contest, aggressively attacking the goal in the early stages of the first half. Twenty-five minutes into the match, Jason Gomez drove the ball from mid-field into the net for Decatur’s first score. Neither team scored during the remainder of the first half and Decatur took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Decatur was able to score one more goal in the second half before time ran out, earning its first conference win by defeating the Trojans, 2-0. This would be the first time in five years that Decatur defeated Subiaco.
In other soccer action, the varsity girls soccer team lost to Shiloh Christian, 8-0, in conference action.
After spring break, both the varsity boys’ and girls’ soccer teams will be back in action March 29 when they travel to Eureka Springs to take on their longtime rivals in a non-conference match. The varsity girls’ match starts at 5 p.m., with the varsity boys playing at 7 p.m.
