Bull­dogs notch first con­fer­ence match against Tro­jans

DECATUR — It would prove to be a very phys­i­cal soc­cer con­test when the Su­bi­aco Academy Tro­jans rolled into Decatur March 15 to meet the Bull­dogs in the first con­fer­ence match at Bull­dog Sta­dium. When the dust set­tled 80 min­utes later, the Bull­dogs emerged vic­to­ri­ous over the Tro­jans by two.

The Bull­dogs took con­trol of the con­test, ag­gres­sively at­tack­ing the goal in the early stages of the first half. Twenty-five min­utes into the match, Jason Gomez drove the ball from mid-field into the net for Decatur’s first score. Nei­ther team scored dur­ing the re­main­der of the first half and Decatur took a 1-0 lead into the half­time break.

Decatur was able to score one more goal in the sec­ond half be­fore time ran out, earn­ing its first con­fer­ence win by de­feat­ing the Tro­jans, 2-0. This would be the first time in five years that Decatur de­feated Su­bi­aco.

In other soc­cer ac­tion, the var­sity girls soc­cer team lost to Shiloh Chris­tian, 8-0, in con­fer­ence ac­tion.

Af­ter spring break, both the var­sity boys’ and girls’ soc­cer teams will be back in ac­tion March 29 when they travel to Eureka Springs to take on their long­time ri­vals in a non-con­fer­ence match. The var­sity girls’ match starts at 5 p.m., with the var­sity boys play­ing at 7 p.m.
