UCA announces Schedler Honors Scholars for fall

CONWAY — The University of Central Arkansas Norbert O. Schedler Honors College has selected 75 incoming firstyear students as its newest class of Honors Scholars. Kya DeZurik and Vince Rajsombath of Gentry High School, as well as Martha Slaybaugh of Bella Vista, were among those selected.

The entering class of 2018 has an average high school GPA above 4.0 and an average ACT score of 30. The class also includes four out-of-state students. This year’s applicant pool was one of the largest in the 36-year history of the Schedler Honors College with 835 applicants, 176 of whom underwent full-day interviews on the UCA campus.

The number of Honors College applicants has risen significan­tly each year for the last four years. All members of the incoming class were selected using a holistic admissions process that factors in the applicant’s academic performanc­e, service and leadership potential. The process has been held up within the national collegiate honors community as one of the most thorough admissions processes in the nation.

Acceptance into the Schedler Honors College includes access to UCA’s top scholarshi­p, a living-learning community in Jefferson W. Farris Honors Hall and ample opportunit­ies for servicelea­rning, project-based education, collaborat­ive work, undergradu­ate research, travel abroad opportunit­ies and internship support. Honors Scholars participat­e in a unique interdisci­plinary curriculum that focuses on the individual growth and transforma­tion of students while preparing them to be leaders in their chosen fields. Students in the Schedler Honors College average approximat­ely 1,000 cumulative hours of community service annually.

Establishe­d in 1982, the Schedler Honors College at UCA has become one of the most full-featured in the nation and is a leader in providing enhanced educationa­l opportunit­ies in a living-learning environmen­t designed to develop students as citizen-scholars.
