Pioneers can’t keep pace with Tigers
GENTRY — In a much more evenly matched contest, the Pioneers came up short on Friday when they hosted the Tigers from Prairie Grove, losing 33 to 14.
The Tigers scored first, but the Pioneers tied things back up at 7 with a touchdown and point after by the end of the first quarter.
Prairie Grove added another touchdown and point after in the second quarter which Gentry matched, but the Tigers scored another touchdown before the halftime break to be up by six, 20-14.
The Tigers kept the Pioneers off the boards in the second half and scored a touchdown in the third and a touchdown and point after in the final quarter of the game for the win.
Zack Jarnagan, a Gentry sophomore, picked up Gentry’s two touchdowns, one on the ground in a drive from the 1-yard line and another through the air. Giovanny Ramirez (senior) kicked Gentry’s two extra points.
Devon Ellis (senior) led the Pioneers in rushing yards, with 55. Peyton Wright (senior) picked up 80 yards on eight passes. Jarnagan had 71 yards on seven receptions. Garrett Hays (senior) had 15 tackles and five more assists in the game.
Gentry (2-3 in conference play and 2-6 overall) is scheduled to host the Lincoln Wolves (3-2, 6-2) at 7 p.m. on Friday in Pioneer Stadium.
