DECATUR — A sudden snowstorm was not enough to stop the Colors Day celebration at Decatur High School Jan. 25.

Shortly after the start of the Colors Day pep rally at Peterson Gym in Decatur, the snow began falling (hard at times). But still, the pep rally went on with the introduction of the Colors Day court and their escorts, followed by the introduction of both junior high boys and girls and senior high boys and girls basketball teams.

Four seniors were in contention for the title of queen, Sammie Skaggs, Lizzie Haisman, Caleigh Trejo and Kelsey Woods.

Ring bearers for this year’s Colors Day event were Sophie Garcia, daughter of Sofia and Osbaldo Garcia, and Jan Carlos Hernandez, son of Esbiedy and Carlos Hernandez. Both Sophia and Jan are first graders at Decatur Northside Elementary. They were accompanied by Ana Ruiz, a freshmen member of the Decatur Cheer squad.

The Decatur Cheer squad led the student body in several cheers, including the Bulldog fight song, which was played by the Decatur High School pep band.

Serving as master of ceremonies for this year’s event was cheer captain Kaylee Morales, who led Decatur Middle and High Schools in a series of fun games, including tug-ofwar and ping-pong ball drop.

After nearly a threehour trip braving the cold temperatures and snow showers, the Cotter teams arrived at Peterson for a three-game series with the Bulldogs.

The bleachers were full of Bulldog fans and the Decatur Junior High boys game was the first contest of the night. It was an exciting game that went down to the wire. The Cotter Junior High Warriors took the win over the junior Bulldogs, 37-33,

Prior to the start of the Bulldog-Warrior contest, the Colors Day court took center stage. As each maid, accompanied by an escort and a family member, walked to center court she was introduced by Elaine Christman, organizer of this year’s event.

Then came the moment everybody waited for, the announcement of the king and queen. First, the king was announced. The title went to Ryan Ross.

“And the 2019 Colors Day queen is,” Christman paused. “Sammie Skaggs!”

Suddenly Peterson Gym erupted in thunderous applause and cheers as the bleachers came alive to celebrate Skaggs’ crowning achievement.

After Ross secured the ceremonial sash, he put the crown on Skaggs’ head, making it official.

The day was capped off with a win by the Lady Bulldogs over the Cotter Lady Warriors and then by the Colors Day dance in the high school cafeteria.
