GRAVETTE — Ten teens in the summer reading program at the Gravette Public Library gathered Tuesday, July 30, for a class on Galaxy Painting. The class was the third in a four-week series of activities in the “A Universe of Stories” summer program.

Teens met at 4 p.m. each week with previous activities covering Space Origami and Living and Working in Space. A final program, an Out of This World Opportunity, was scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 6.

Young artists in the Galaxy Painting class were supplied with black canvases and paint in shades of blues and purple. Using sponges, they dabbed paint on the canvas to create pictures of galaxies. For the final touch, each teen splattered drops of white ink on his painting to simulate stars.

Teens set reading goals and completed reading logs to record their progress. Goal choices could be selected on four levels, Moonwalker — 4 books, Mars Explorer — 8 books, Galactic Traveler — 12 books and To Infinity and Beyond — 15 books. Eighteen teenagers read a total of 329 books during the program. Each book had to contain at least 150 pages.

Prize drawings were held Thursday, Aug. 1, for those who met their reading goals. Winners were Lainey Castillo, Moonwalker; Cheyne Brandl, Mars Explorer; Tiffany Jenkins, Galactic Traveler; and Leilani Pittman, To Infinity and Beyond. Prizes were donated by local businesses.

A kickoff event for students in sixth through 12th grades is scheduled from 4-5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, for a new program, STEAM@TheLibrary. The program will include activities on Maker Monday, Tech Tuesday, Wear it Wednesday and Code Club Friday each week during the school year. Maker Mondays will feature arts and crafts; Tech Tuesday, circuitry and robotics; Wear it Wednesday, wearables such as jewelry and knitted items; and Code Club Friday, coding. Students will choose projects to work on to earn badges. The program begins Monday, Sept. 9, at the library, 119 Main Street S.E.
