DECATUR — Contestants and family members were the only ones staying dry Aug. 3 as a steady rain began falling during the 2019 Tiny Tots contest on the stage at the Montgomery USO Bandstand at Veterans Park in Decatur.

Ten girls and two boys vied for the title of the 2019 Miss Tiny Tots and Mister Tiny Tots during the 66th annual Decatur Barbecue.

Gracie Rice, Jaylee Tosta, Aliviah Pool, Isabel Tharp, Raith Rainey, Sophia Wynn, Ember Cloud, Carson Holland, Ariana Mejia and Kyndall Lowery competed for the girls’ title, while Xander Frazier and Jackson Clayton competed for the boys’ title.

Desi Meek, the reigning Miss Decatur Barbecue, served as the contest master of ceremonies.

Each contestant made his or her way to center stage where Meek was waiting for the interview and talent portion of the contest. Meek asked each what was her favorite color, pet and things to do. Each of the 12 contestants was also asked to do a song or display some other talent.

The most interesting show of talent came when Kyndall Lowery brought her dog on stage to perform several tricks. With little coaxing, the dog performed heeling, sitting and lying as requested.

The interview and talent portion of the contest took 30 minutes to complete, after which the contest went to the judges. It took five minutes for the judges to decide the winners.

For the girls, Gracie Rice was the second runnerup with the first runnerup award going to Aliviah Pool. The 2019 Miss Decatur Tiny Tots title went to Ember Cloud.

Since there were only two boys, each won an award. The first runnerup was Jackson Clayton, and the title of Mister Decatur Tiny Tots went to Xander Frazier.

Cody Kelsheimer, the 2018 boys’ title holder, handed Frazier his crown and sash, while Maree Cherry, 2018 girls’ winner, handed Cloud her crown.
