DECATUR — Small children have always been known for saying exactly what is on their young minds. That is why the Miss and Mister Tiny Tots contest is one of the more popular events of the long-running Decatur Barbecue.

Seven girls and one boy, ages 6-8, lined up on the right side of the Bill Montgomery USO Bandstand at Veterans Park in Decatur on Aug. 6 awaiting their turns to walk across the stage and into the hearts of the crowd.

The contestants for the 68th Decatur Barbecue event included Hannah Smith, Kynsli Sybil Hope, Scarlett Ellis, Mela Smith, Hadley Day, Addilyn Haskins, Peyton Stephens and the lone boy contestant, Finley Hill.

As the contestants completed their walks, Kenzie Hill (the master of ceremony) asked if they wanted to showcase one of their talents, singing or telling a joke. A few of the contestants chose to sing, but most declined and moved off stage.

In the end, there could only be one Miss and Mister Decatur Barbecue Tiny Tot. The photogenic winner was Mela Smith, the second runner-up was Scarlett Ellis, the first runner-up was Hadley Day. And the 2022 Miss Decatur Tiny Tot title went to

Addilyn Haskins. With only one boy entered in the contest, the new 2022 Mister Decatur Tiny Tot went to Finley Hill.

Piper Knox and Able Haskins performed the honor of crowning the new winners.
