Both Lady Bulldog volleyball teams fall to Lady Tigers
MANSFIELD — The Decatur Lady Bulldog junior high and varsity volleyball teams had a long road trip ahead when the teams departed Peterson-Owens Fieldhouse in Decatur on Aug. 30 bound for a big match with the Lady Tigers of Mansfield. The end result did not bode well for both teams, as the Lady Tigers picked up both wins over the Lady Bulldogs.
Up first was the junior high A Lady Bulldogs. As with the three victories of Aug. 22, 23 and 25, the girls began pulling away from the Lady Tigers until Decatur hit an invisible wall. A series of simple mistakes (hitting the ball behind the court or into the bleachers or into the nets) allowed Mansfield to storm past and take a commanding lead.
But as quickly as Decatur lost the lead, the team rallied and came right back, retaking the
lead once again. From this point, it was anybody’s match and the lead changed hands repeatedly. Mansfield hit set point at 24-23 when Decatur powered back and tied the contest at 24 all. Decatur jumped ahead and was one point away from a victory. But three straight points by the Lady Tiger junior high team gave them the set, 27-25.
The second set also was a close battle between the Lady Bulldogs and Lady Tigers. Like the first set, the second set came down to three straight points which earned the Mansfield junior high A team the set, 25-22, and the match in two sets.
The Decatur Lady Bulldog varsity team continued to struggle and simple mistakes in serving, passing and digging cost the team the match in three sets to the Mansfield Lady Tigers.
