Junior Bulldogs take third place in Jay Tournament
JAY, Okla. — The Decatur junior high boys’ seventhand eighth-grade teams had quite a week when the two teams traveled to Jay, Okla., for the Jay Invitation Junior High basketball tournament in the school’s three gyms. At the last game, which pitted the Bulldogs with the Wardogs from Miami, on Nov. 10, Decatur found itself with a third-place win in the three-day tournament.
In the first contest, on Nov. 7, the Bulldogs squared off against the host Jay Bulldogs. Decatur made easy work of Jay, taking the first-round win and advancing to the second round against Kansas (Okla.) Comets. There, the Bulldogs’ hopes of a clean sweep of the tournament were dashed by a stronger Comet team, which meant Decatur was off to the consolation round for a third-place finish in the tournament.
Decatur’s final opponent of the tournament was the Miami Wardogs. The Bulldogs made easy work of the Wardogs to take the third-place win in the tournament.
The seventh graders were not as fortunate; they lost all three games. But redemption was only a day away as the young team took on the Fort Smith Patriots at home in Peterson-Owens Fieldhouse in Decatur Friday night. This time, the seventh graders were able to take the win, 28-20, over the Patriots.
