Be­cause the Bri­tish didn’t take “no” for an an­swer, a young na­tion and the mili­tia of Bal­ti­more rally to send them home…again.

Only one gen­er­a­tion (29 years) af­ter the end of Amer­ica’s Rev­o­lu­tion­ary War, the for­mer colonies and Great Bri­tain took up arms again. Troops mus­tered across Mary­land, in nearby ter­ri­to­ries and at sea for what present-day Gov­er­nor Martin O’Mal­ley (and oth­ers) call “the sec­ond war of in­de­pen­dence.”— Jean L. Cohen
