T

he Doctors’ Travis Stork, M.D., has become America’s go-to guy for great advice on losing belly fat. And his newest “lean-belly Rx” is more powerful than ever! So far, fans who’ve tried it report losing up to 11 pounds a week. Dr. Stork’s surprising secret? Powerful bacteria in our digestive tracts. “Each healthy adult is home to up to 1,000 different species of bacteria—and as many as 100 trillion microscopic organisms,” he says. Thanks to advances in lab tests, “scientists are discovering that these bacteria can play a huge role in weight loss— especially the loss of belly fat.” Though Dr. Stork says more research is needed to determine the exact mechanisms that help certain bacteria flatten bellies, there is solid evidence that lean folks have “up to 70% more gut bacteria overall compared to overweight individuals.” And breakthrough university tests suggest that simple diet tweaks can change and increase the bacteria inside us in a mere three to four days. “Science is telling us we can quickly increase our chances of burning off belly fat and maintaining a healthy weight,” says Dr. Stork, author of The Lose Your Belly Diet. “I want to help people take advantage of that.”

Quick-start guide ● Eat to rev flat-belly bacteria

According to Dr. Stork, research shows that flat-belly bacteria begin to surge when a person eats a high-fiber diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, beans, seeds and whole grains. Meanwhile, the opposite happens on a diet loaded with processed food, meat and cheese. Explanation? All unprocessed plants contain prebiotics— special types of fiber that “feed” slimming bacteria and help them thrive. So Dr. Stork has you load up on plant foods; you also limit saturated fat and processed carbs, which appear to feed bacteria linked to weight gain. “Whether you go vegetarian or simply replace some of the meat in your diet with plant protein, it’s the best way to get the protein you need while giving your beneficial bacteria more of the fiber they love,” he says.

● Slimming reinforcements

While prebiotics feed flat-belly bacteria, probiotics introduce new beneficial bacteria into your system. That’s why Dr. Stork wants you to eat probiotic foods at least once a day. “Yogurt is the best-known probiotic food,” he says. “Other choices include a yogurt-like drink called kefi r, a spicy Korean condiment called kimchi and a soy-based meat substitute called tempeh.” He adds that some ( but not all) sauerkraut and pickles are also probiotic. As a rule of thumb, he says, “foods

that contain probiotics are refrigerated and have ‘live and active cultures’ or ‘live enzymes’ on the label.”

● What about probiotic supplements?

Dr. Stork says their results will vary widely— likely based on whether a supplement happens to contain a type of bacteria you lack. Better options will exist in the future. For now, “they’re fine to try with your doctor’s okay. If you see improvements after four to eight weeks, great.” If not, forgo supplements or ask about an option with a different bacterial mix.

● Make it ultra-easy

For big doses of both prebiotics and probiotics with minimal effort, Dr. Stork’s soups and salads are key. “You get a lot of bang for your buck with both soup and salad,” he insists. “They’re easy to make, there are limitless variations, and they can be the quickest, most portable options.” That’s why we’re sharing some of his best recipes — ones that get a thumbs-up from real-life success stories.

● Real-world wow

Shannon Burwell is one of those success stories. For years, she could only slim down by starving herself. Then Dr. Stork got her to feed her flatbelly bacteria instead. “If I was hungry, I ate more,” says the California mom, who loves homemade veggie soup. “I didn’t hold back.” Even so, she shed 30 pounds in 60 days! Then there’s California yoyo dieter Brenda Deshaies, 50. Dr. Stork’s plan—and especially his Easy Flat-belly Salad—helped shrink four inches from her waist in a few months. “I was ready to accept myself as a large middle-aged lady,” she recalls. “But now I’m down 21 pounds and feel young and vibrant. I have more energy, less joint pain, I sleep better. I didn’t realize I wasn’t feeling well until Dr. Stork’s diet made me feel so much better. All women should try it!”
