California’s Disneyland opened its gates to the public in Anaheim in 1955. To celebrate the park’s massive success — as well as its 40th anniversar y— a time capsule filled with artifacts from the park’s first four decades was buried in front of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle in 1995. It’s due to be opened on July 17, 2035!

An unknown girl group from Detroit, The Supremes, released their second Motown single, “Buttered Popcorn,” in 1961. Although the tune went nowhere, the trio— composed of Diana Ross, Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard— did, amassing a record- breaking number of chart-toppers, including “Where Did Our Love Go,” I Hear a Symphony” and “Baby Love!”

The first World’s Fair in the United States took place in New York City in 1853. Modeled after London’s exhibition two years prior, the New York Crystal Palace— an iron structure with more than 15,000 panes of glass— was created to house the event, officially known as the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations!

Nelson Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa, in 1918. The child who would grow up to be the first black president of South Africa, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient and the holder of honorary degrees from more than 50 universiti­es worldwide— was also the first member of his family to attend school!

The first Krispy Kreme Doughnuts shop opened in Winston-salem, North Carolina, in 1937. Creator Vernon Rudolph is said to have bought the doughnut recipe (now locked away in a vault) from a French chef in New Orleans. Foodie sleuths speculate that one of its secret ingredient­s is mashed potatoes!
