I decided to buy a lottery ticket, thinking I might be luckier far from home. I was standing in line at a convenience store, looking at the choice of lottery tickets, when the young cashier said, “Don't do it, lady. I never see anyone win!” I laughed and said, “Maybe you’ll be my good-luck charm. If I win, I’ll give you 10 percent.” So I bought a ticket, and sure enough, I didn’t win! But I thought the young man was nice to an out-of-towner, so I went back to the store and told him I’d won $100. “A deal’s a deal! Here’s your 10 percent,” I said, and handed him $10. He was shocked! Then he turned around and handed the money to the man working behind him. “That money is for you,” I protested. The young man explained that his car broke down, and his boss had been driving him to work. “I promised to give him $10 on payday, and now thanks to you, I can keep my promise early,” he said. Hearing that, I felt like a winner after all!
