Pumpkin seeds to lower cholesterol

Simply eating 1/2 cup of pumpkin seeds every day could lower your level of artery-clogging cholesterol at least 10% within four weeks, a recent European study reveals. Pumpkin seeds are chock-full of phytosterols, compounds that block fat absorption, plus encourage your liver to keep its cholesterol production in check.

2 Sunflower seeds to nix hypertension

Snacking on just 1/3 cup of shelled, unsalted sunflower seeds daily could lower your blood pressure four points or more, the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry reports. When sunflower seeds are digested, they release a compound that acts like a gentle, natural ACE inhibitor, widening your blood vessels to make circulation easier, says study coauthor Cristina Megias, PH.D., of Spain’s Instituto de la Grasa.

Flaxseeds to help lift your mood

British research suggests that consuming 2 Tbs. of ground flaxseeds each day could cut your risk of blue moods 75%— and help you shake off the doldrums in as little as one month if you’re feeling draggy right now. The tiny seeds are rich in DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), a healthy fat that your brain uses to make mood-boosting serotonin, the study authors explain. Look for ground flaxseed in your grocery store or online. (One option: Hodgson Mill Milled Flax Seed, $2.99 for 12 oz., Swansonvitamins.com.) Try it sprinkled over cereal, yogurt and salads.

4 Coriander seeds to steady your blood

sugar

Chewing 1/4 tsp. of coriander seeds—which have a spicy, citrusy flavor— after each meal could help keep your blood- sugar level steady (and keep your energy level high!) in as little as one week, recent research in the journal Food Chemistry suggests. How come? Coriander seeds are brimming with plant acids that help your muscles burn blood sugar for fuel, explains study coauthor Devi Chithra, PH.D. Find coriander seeds in the spice aisle at your supermarket or online. (One option: Whole Moroccan Coriander Seeds, $2.70 for 1.5 oz., Thespicehouse.com.)
