Myrna wasn’t thinking about romance . . . until she met Jim!

- — Jill Weatherholt

Myrna loved hummingbirds and was on a mission to transform her backyard into a sanctuary for her tiny winged friends.

“Welcome to All Things Birds,” a deep voice called out as Myrna entered the store.

She glanced toward the man, who had a warm and easy smile.

“Hi, I’m looking for your best hummingbird feeders and nectar. I’d like to create a haven for them.”

“My mother loved them, too,” he said as he extended his hand. “I’m Jim Matheson and happy to help you.”

She left, her mind swirling with thoughts of Jim

Her heart fluttered as his rugged hand clasped hers. “I’m Myrna Rogers—it’s nice to meet you.”

For the next half hour, Jim guided Myrna through the store’s variety of feeders and bright red nectar.

“I’ll be honest,” he said, lowering his voice. “I wouldn’t advise buying our food. You’re better off making it with water and sugar. I’ll write down the recipe. We’ve got to take care of these special guys.”

Myrna’s heart warmed. Jim appeared to be a special guy, too. She appreciated his honesty. “Do you have any other suggestions?”

“Yes, certain flowers are a great way to attract more hummingbirds.”

Myrna knew little about flowers. “What do you recommend?”

“Salvia and bee balm are not only beautiful, but the hummers love them. They’ll be perfect for your garden.”

After chatting for another 20 minutes, the door chimed as a couple entered the store. Myrna would’ve loved to continue their conversation, but she knew he had to tend to the other customers. “I guess I’ll hit the nursery this Saturday. Thanks for your time and expertise, Jim.”

Myrna left with four new feeding stations and a mind swirling with thoughts of Jim.

The following Saturday, Myrna strolled through the nursery’s rows of flowers. Overwhelmed by the selection, she wasn’t sure if she’d be able to locate the specific flowers Jim had recommended.

“I was hoping I’d see you today.” The familiar voice caused her heart to hammer.

“Jim—i wasn’t expecting to see you here,” she said as a rush of excitement took hold.

He flashed a crooked smile, “I work here every Saturday morning. What can I say, I love all things nature.” She gazed around. “I can see why. There are so many stunning flowers.”

Her arm tingled when he placed his hand on her forearm. “Come on—i’ll show you the flowers I suggested.”

A week later, Myrna gazed out onto her yard, thinking of Jim as she sipped coffee. This morning, a crew from the nursery was coming to plant flowers that Jim said would attract hummingbirds.

A truck rumbled out front, and her heart soared when she spotted Jim stepping out of the vehicle.

“Good morning,” he said with a smile. “Are you ready to get to work?”

“I thought a landscaping crew was coming today.”

He opened his arms. “I’m it—if you want something done right, you do it yourself.”

“I’ll go change!” Myrna raced inside the house; she couldn’t remember the last time she was this excited.

Four hours later, the couple sat on Myrna’s deck, admiring the fruits of their labor. Myrna looked at Jim and smiled. She was thrilled that her new hummingbird sanctuary had not only attracted the birds but also a very special man.
