The first race was held at the Indianapol­is Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana, in 1909. The largest sporting venue in the world is so big that Churchill Downs, the Roman Colosseum, Vatican City and Yankee Stadium can all fit inside the 253-acre oval!

Women won the right to vote when Congress ratified the 19th Amendment in 1920— by one vote! Tennessee State Representa­tive Harry Burn changed his “nay” to a “yea” at the last minute after he received a letter from his mother urging him to “hurry and vote for suffrage”!

One of the greatest—and most beloved—musicians of the 20th century, Elvis Presley, died in 1977 at the age of 42 in his Memphis, Tennessee, home. More than 600,000 fans visit the King’s home— Graceland— annually, making it the second-most-visited private home in the country, after the White House.

Actor and comedian Steve Carell was born in Concord, Massachuse­tts, in 1962. Before becoming one of Hollywood’s most in- demand funnymen, Carell planned on going to law school. However, when it came time to fill out the applicatio­n, he found he couldn’t answer the question, “Why do you want to be a lawyer?” and decided to pursue acting instead!

The Disney television movie High School Musical 2 premiered in 2007— and drew an audience of 17.6 million viewers, making it not only the highest Disney Channel Original Movie in history but also the highest in cable history!
