Woman's World

Highway helper

When her car broke down on the entrance ramp of a busy highway, Woman’s World reader, Geraldine Treacy of Estes Park, Colorado, says an angel came to her rescue. She writes:

Years ago, after spending the evening shopping, I left a New Jersey mall around 9 pm on a cold evening. The weather was not only frigid, it was also pouring rain. I got behind the steering wheel thinking how glad I would be to get home.

I drove just a couple of blocks, then turned onto the highway entrance ramp— and that’s when my car stopped dead. With traffic coming up behind me, I was a sitting duck.

When I couldn’t start the car, I frantically put it in park, turned the flashers on and ran across the highway to a convenience store. Shaking, I called for roadside assistance. My heart sank when the customer service representative told me that I should expect a tow truck in about an hour. An hour! By then I was sure my car would be rear-ended.

After making my way back across the highway to try in vain to restart the car, I got out and waited nearby. I was exhausted and apprehensive, expecting to see my car wrecked before it was towed. As I stood in the cold, pouring rain, I begged my Guardian Angel to please come help me.

Just then, out of the dark and dreary night, a middleaged man hurried across the highway. “Would you like me to try to start your car?” he asked.

“I sure would appreciate that,” I answered.

Amazingly, on his first try, the engine turned over, and he steered the car off the highway to safety on the side of the road. When I thanked him effusively, he nodded, then handed me a card, turned and walked away.

I couldn’t read it in the dark, but after roadside assistance arrived and I finally got home, I looked at the card.

It was a Bible verse that read: For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.

Psalm 91:11–12 I knew then that the prayer that I had said, imploring my Guardian Angel for help, had been answered.

“An angel saved me, and my car, on a cold, rainy night!”
