Regrow hair 40% faster
By age 40, more than 40% of us notice more hair in the shower drain. Fortunately, our MDS promise easy ways to plump up thinning locks
Regrow hair from the inside Enjoy a spring omelet
A delicious way to start the day and jump-start hair growth? Dig into an omelet brimming with spring greens like asparagus or spinach, advises dermatologist Wendy Roberts, M.D. “Not only are egg yolks rich in biotin—which spurs the production of keratin, the main building block of hair—they also contain sulfur, a key component of amino acids central to hair growth.” And Dr. Roberts explains, since green veggies also contain sulfur, a “green omelet” gives your hair a double dose of this vital nutrient.
Drizzle olive oil
It may not look like it’s doing much, but hair is incredibly metabolically active, notes hair loss specialist Marc Avram, M.D. “That’s why incorporating good fats into your diet from sources like olive oil, avocados and fatty fish promotes healthy hair.” Or if you prefer, supplement with omega-3s. According to a recent study, 62% of women taking a daily supplement containing 460 mg. of omega-3 fatty acids increased the thickness of their hair, and 90% saw their hair loss come to a halt! Note: Check with your doctor before supplementing.
Fill up on these minerals
Need another reason to enjoy a juicy burger? “Zinc is a key nutrient for hair growth, and red meat is a rich source of it,” reports dermatologist Melissa Piliang, M.D. Plant-based sources of zinc include legumes and tiny yet mighty seeds. In fact, in one study, snacking on 21⁄ cups of pumpkin seeds
2 weekly significantly increased hair growth.
Try this shampoo
After menopause, a type of testosterone called DHT builds up on the scalp, damaging follicles. Luckily there’s a way to wash that harmful hormone right out of your hair, says Dr. Piliang. “I recommend using a shampoo containing ketoconazole, which has testosterone-blocking properties that boost hair growth.” One to try: Nizoral A-D Ketoconazole Anti-dandruff Shampoo ( Walmart.com).
Massage with mint
By increasing circulation, massaging your scalp for just four minutes a night has been shown to trigger the growth of thicker hair within three months. Wake up follicles even more by first treating them with a little peppermint oil, advises Dr. Roberts. “Peppermint oil cleans and opens up follicles, encouraging growth.” Spritzing roots with 2 drops of peppermint oil and 1⁄ cup of water
2 daily for four weeks has been shown to speed hair growth 40% faster than minoxidil!
Make time for happy
Turns out, a little R& R is like a Goldilocks serum for your hair. “Stress shuts down the hair’s growth phase,” explains Dr. Roberts. “That’s why I encourage my patients to carve out 20 minutes of daily ‘ happy time’ for themselves.” In fact, relaxing for 20 to 30 minutes a day is shown to dial down cortisol levels, spurring hair growth by as much as 75%!
