Woman's World

My guardian angel

When Woman’s World reader Barbara Fox felt terrified and vulnerable while driving in a dangerous rainstorm, a familiar voice led her home safely. She writes:

-

When my husband, Shelly, died, I was left to live alone for the first time in my life. I was slowly getting accustomed to doing things by myself. But it was still a very difficult adjustment to living life without him and doing things all alone.

About six months after Shelly’s death, a friend invited me to her daughter’s wedding. The wedding was being held in Orlando, Florida, four hours away from my home in Miami Beach. The thought of driving that far by myself made me nervous. But, not wanting to hurt my friend’s feelings by declining, I bravely decided to go.

Luckily, I had no problems during my drive there. The wedding was beautiful, and I had a great time. I left for home in plenty of time to make sure that I wouldn’t be driving on the highway at night.

I was about halfway home when it started to rain. Then it started to rain harder. It was getting darker and darker, and the wind was howling. The rain was beating down so hard on the car windows that the windshield wipers were almost useless. The defroster wasn’t

working properly either, and it was really hard to see.

I was so scared. All the confidence I had built up completely washed away in that moment. Worry sank in, and I began questioning everything:

Should I keep going and hope for the best? Should I get off at an exit and look for a hotel? What if I couldn’t find one? Where was I anyway?

Suddenly, I heard Shelly’s voice calmly say, “Look for the white line on the road. Just follow the white line.” I know it was him because that’s what he used to say when he was driving and a storm rolled in. I could really feel his comforting, calming presence in the car with me. I did what he said and followed that white line for over an hour until the storm ended.

“Thank you,” I whispered, when I finally got home. As I turned off the car, the feeling of Shelly’s presence disappeared.

I realized that day that no matter how alone I feel, I can be confident in the fact that Shelly will always be by my side to protect me and keep me safe during all of life’s storms.

“I could really feel his comforting presence with me!”
