Wow-worthy ways to style your shelves

Transforming shelves into works of art is surprisingly easy! Here, DIY pro and blogger Katie Striegel shares quick and affordable tricks that will take your space from simple to stylish!

FOR A MONOCHROME LOOK…

“Whether you’re styling a bookshelf or an entire room, a monochromatic look will make your space feel larger and sleeker,” says design pro Katie Striegel. Here, three bookcases are painted blue and lined up against a wall. For a monochrome look with big visual impact, she suggests placing items on shelves in different shades of the same color (like the sky blue books and cobalt vases shown). “This adds interest and dimension to the space.” Tip: Rather than buy new decor, simply spray-paint items, like vases, candlesticks and the like, in shades of blue.

FOR A SUNNY AND STYLISH LOOK…

“The ‘shelfie’— a photo of your shelves that you share on social media— has become a popular design trend because it’s a fun way to organize your shelves and showcase your style to friends,” says Striegel. “Plus, these bright displays bring joy to your space and your day!” She suggests dressing up a plain cube unit by pressing pretty peel-and-stick wallpaper in sunny hues to backings. And these visually pleasing shelves can be featured in any room— even the kitchen, she says. “This cube unit is nice for a kitchen since it provides tons of extra storage space and flair.”

FOR A BRIGHT AND MODERN LOOK…

“A circular shelving unit adds a cheery focal point to a blank, solid- colored wall,” notes Striegel. “This shape provides a modern splash of style— it’s a simple addition, but it has the power to liven up an entire room!” To get the look, hang a circular shelving unit (like Thorgunn Circle Shelf, $ 60, Wayfair.com) on a blank wall. Then place decorative items in a variety of shapes— from patterned bowls to glass terrariums to bird figurines— on each shelf in vibrant colors. Says Striegel, “Adding plants or cacti to shelves lends a little life and texture to your vignette!”
