Get your pet therapy-certified!

1 Look for these traits!

“A great therapy pet has an affinity for people,” says Dr. Annie Valuska, PH.D., a behavioral expert for Purina Cat Chow. “Your pet must have a calm temperament, respond to commands and be litter-box and harness trained.” Pets must also be 1 year old, have lived with their owner for six months and have no history of aggression.

2 Apply for certification

To register your pet through Pet Partners, visit Petpartners.org/ catchow, says Dr. Valuska. Click “Pet Partners therapy animal team,” create an account, then click “Start my volunteer registration.” Next, complete the handler’s course online and visit your vet to complete your pet’s health evaluation. Then schedule an evaluation to test your pet’s skills. Once your pet has passed the test, there is a one-time $ 95 fee to get your certification letter.

3 Volunteer as a team

“Once your cat or dog is certified, it’s your job to approach facilities in your community where you want to volunteer,” Dr. Valuska advises. Visit Petpartners.org and click “Act,” then “Pet Partners at your facility” and “zip code search” to locate nursing homes, schools or hospitals in your area. You can also sign up to do virtual visits!
