Add style with chalkboard paint

Chalkboards aren’t just for the classroom! This trendy paint technique infuses charm and function into any space. Here, DIY pro Dori Turner shares the super- easy how-to’s

IN THE LIVING ROOM: ACCENT WALL

“Chalk paint is so versatile— it comes in a variety of colors, and it’s easy to work with,” says Turner. Plus, it creates a blank canvas for hand-drawn art on any surface! One stylish idea: a chalk paint accent wall. “Using chalk paint to create a focal wall is an effortless way to offer interest to a neutral living room.” To get the look, use a foam roller to apply 2 to 3 coats of chalk paint (like Krylon Chalkboard Paint, $16 per qt., Amazon.com) to a wall. Let dry for up to 72 hours. Rub chalk over the painted wall to “season” it; erase with a dry towel before use. “For a whimsical feel, freehand a design or use a stencil for a playful pattern, as shown.”

IN THE YARD: PRETTY POTS

“Chalk paint isn’t just for furniture or walls,” says Turner. “It can also be used to breathe new life into dated home accents like picture frames or planters.” Here, a few quick coats of paint transform an old terra-cotta pot into a modern planter. To do: Place pot on a piece of newspaper and apply two to three coats of chalk paint. For smaller accents, try spray paint (like Krylon Chalk Spray Paint, $ 9, Michaels.com). Let dry. Rub a piece of chalk over surface to “season” it; wipe off with a dry towel. Draw on a design or plant name.

IN THE ENTRY: CHIC CLOSET

“Adding coats of chalk paint to a hallway or entryway closet gives an area character and draws the eye without overwhelming,” says Turner. Chalk paint is also functional— it can keep you organized! She suggests using the chalk to jot down reminders or notes for family members. Tip: To make the surface magnetic, apply three coats of magnetic primer (like Magnetize- It! Magnetic Primer, $ 20, Amazon.com) before painting, then hang photos or memos.

IN THE KITCHEN: PLAYFUL PANTRY

A kitchen door goes from plain to playful with a coat of chalk paint! Whether you’re jotting down grocery lists, recipe ideas or drawings, the messages will be in full view, Turner says. To do: Apply two to three coats of chalk paint to closet or pantry door. Let dry. Rub chalk over surface to “season” it; wipe off with a dry towel.
